"The Good Dinosaur" asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Bencana alam yang masif membuat Arlo kehilangan salah satu anggota keluarganya. Kecerobohannya dalam mengejar "biang kerok" tragedi tersebut juga membuat Arlo terpisah dari keluarga. Dari sini, cerita The Good Dinosaur bergerak ke arah yang lebih konvensional saat dalam perjalanan pulang (dan mencari jati diri), Arlo bertemu dengan seorang anak manusia barbar yang kemudian menjadi "peliharaan"-nya (anak ini bahkan merespon saat Arlo memberi panggilan Spot).
